It's going tobe tricky to find something that will cover the pond and keep
1" diameter snakes out but let frogs greater than 1" diameter in;-) Perhaps
a "folly-ness" sea monster with a preference for snakes might be an idea.

Are you sure the snake could/would have eaten them? How small are your
fish? Smaller than an inch or two? Sounds like you need to provide them
some kind of underwater shelter until they are big enough; a snake isn't
going to eat a large fish.

Koko & Yum Yum are gold and silver withOUT the whiskers. Maine Coons,
golden MacFayden (no sleuth there, just a sleeper) and black Calhoun
(smarter than any Siamese by far) have the CAT WHO category covered. Was
giving my plain old goldfish very English names (Lawrence, Phillipa, George,
Ronald, Margaret, Henrietta, etc) when I purchased my first koi. So for the
Oriental twist, I turned to Gilbert and Sullivan. Names for the next fish:
Pooh Ba, Nanki-Poo, Katisha, Mikado. Might the sanke be the Grand
Executioner. I hope not..
Cal & Mac forgive me for using the venerable cat names on mere fish. Alas
(or joy) the twain will never meet. Cal & Mac are strictly house cats.
For Qwilleran I do share your passion!

They have a lot of shelter (rock ledges, plastic containers (with slits
large enough for small fish) turned upside down with plants on top,
corrugated drain for tunnel, etc) but won't the snake follow them in there?
He is a good underwater swimmer, I think. But he really did make a very
hasty retreat when he saw me.

I guess the key would be to have their shelter have openings too small for
the snake...

But no gills.
Keeping fingers crossed for the little fishies.
Except this does remind me of how I got my first aquarium set up and
thought what a beautiful underwater garden I'd created. And then some
of the fish got aggressive and others got sick and I had to start
playing with medications and, and, and...
I still enjoyed it but it did take a certain attitude adjustment. And
cheaper fish.

I just put some bubble crates (upside down) in the pond and covered with
rocks to hold them down. The holes are small circles and I don't think the
snake would risk that. The small fish can hide in them . . if they are
smart enough to use them.
Keep my fish in your good thoughts.

My sister had a net over the pond to keep out the neighborhood
cats, but a bird got caught in it trying to get a drink of water.
No more nets. She was horrified and just rescued the bird in
time. June
