Our grocery store is carrying "new season" apples from NZ, Braeburn, I
think. Charging premium prices. They are last year's apples, aren't
they? It's spring in NZ, apples are probably budding or blooming.

Yes, they must be ex-cool-store I think. Our applea are barely starting
to bud as yet! Possibly /slightly/ earlier in the main apple-growing
areas, but not by much. Definitely no fresh fruit for some months yet!
March-April is the main apple-picking season in NZ.
Braeburns do cool-store well, but by this time of year, while still
pleasantly edible, they are past their best.
It is a very popular variety here, and with good reason! We usually buy
this one in preference to other varieties, when our own apples are
either "not yet" or are all finished.
