snapdragons in pots...

Hi folks,

For there first time this year, I am planting snapdragons in pots.
Generally I have only planted them in the ground. Anyway, I planted most
in the ground and they are doing great, however the ones in the pots are
not doing so well. It could have been because of the HOT weather we were
having up till a couple of days ago, when it cooled of, but I kept them
watered.

Is there a trick to growing snapdragons in pots, that I'm not aware of?

Alan,

Container plantings are more sensitive to air temperature changes...both hot and
cold. The ground is a great heat sink, and keeps snapdragon roots cooler than
containers might during hot spells. So your snapdragons in containers could
have gotten too hot while your plants in the ground wouldn't have suffered as
much.

Hi June :)

I do most these things, and I also use the polymer crystals which allow me to
put some plants in full sun that would normally not survive the heat of full
sun. The polymer crystals have been the best thing for me in container
gardening. All other plants, geraniums, lobelia, etc., are doing well in the
same locations as the snapdragons. I think maybe, like Barb said, the snaps
don't like intense heat, and they don't like hot soil either. They seem to be
recouping (the ones that haven't died) now that it has cooled off.

My favorite thing right now in my containers is, I did all the hanging baskets
with red geraniums and blue lobelia. Looks so pretty, the dark blue and
bright red. Something to keep in mind for the years to come, definitely.
That is a combination I had never tried.

Actually neither, I bought a couple of flats of lobelia. I also used them for
a border around my rose hedge which surround my front yard. :)

This weekend I'm putting in my winter lawn, a perennial rye grass..although not
perennial here... :< It just gets to hot here for it to make it through the
summer. I do have some shady spots where it hangs around all year, but other
than that, it disappears completely. I also hope to finish my chair, although
it will probably be Monday before I can finish that. I have a 3 day weekend
this week. I always take three days off when I plant my winter lawn. Seems to
help if I'm there to keep the lawn wet, and the birds there from eating the
seed. So, you will be able to see my winter lawn come in on the cams.

Also, taking Julie to the boyce thompson arboretum on Sunday, should be a hoot,
2 people with the love of gardening, trying to get a lifetimes experience into
1 day...I love talking with gardeners and learning from them. I also got most
my bulbs planted yesterday, but I have a delivery of 200 more coming in from
brecks, and I don't know why they are not here yet. They've already charged my
MC, about a month ago. I anxiously await them.

Hi Alan,
Good question! I have grown them both in the ground and this
year is a basket because I wanted to put the basket of snap-
dragons in a wooden deer planter. The planter with the
basket of flowers was placed by the birdbath and got some
shade from the bigger tiger lily plant. We also had a
lot of rain this summer and it was cooler, so the snaps did
very well and are still blooming. I deadhead them.
Usually, I take my chances with container gardening because the
places where I want them gets full sun and they get too dry and
too much heat.
Most complained of the vegetable yield and mine were slower
and actually did better in a last burst, but the flowers did
better all around.
If the sun is very hot, the temps very dry, try planning for
a bit of shade during the day. The basket sort of deteriates
by the end of the season, but I think they like the basket better
than the plastic containers.
Best,
June

Did you buy the lobelia with the geraniums, or did you grow
them from seed? Sounds lovely. And thanks for the tip about the
chrystals. I'll be looking for them. Also, the old basket that
I had my snaps in allowed for a bit more of "breathing" for the
plants. I took the planter in last weekend so the basket is
now just sitting there and still in bloom by the birdbath.
Best,
June

I understood it the first time Alan! I have not been able to grown =
Snapdragons in a pot, or in the ground! But my 10 yo DD planted some =
in the veggie garden and they are growing just fine! She doesn't like =
vegetables, so in her allotted bed, she grows flowers!

Alan,
Such nice combinations of color and flowers.
I was surprised at first to see that many plants actually survived the
first frost here, but now I end the gardens with that. While
the warmer weather may linger for awhile, I only have the weekends,
so the next thing I know, it's *cold* out there. I rather work
while I still have the light and sun.
Snapdragons, mums, marigolds, and even the roses will continue on
for awhile and I still see many roadside flowers too.
It's a pretty day here -- no clouds, blue skies, and warm sun.
Tonight may be the last time I mow this season however.
Then I'll finish up with the weedwhacking for a nice, trim look.
My miniture rose bush has changed it's leaf color to autumn.
I have it in a large container with some mums that are on their
second blooming. It may be my imagination, but I think these
second blooms are a bit larger than the first.
As my large container, holding over 40 lbs. of soil, is plastic,
I'll dump the soil into the dug garden and take it inside for
next time. I haven't decided what I want to do with the miniture
rose bush though. Another hanging pot? Gads.
Best,
June

This is the first time I've ordered from them, so I'm not sure, since I have
not received them yet. Maybe June can answer that one for you?

Hi Alan,
What a fun-filled and busy weekend - not only the show but
you have a lot planned to do outdoors too. You and Julie should
have a blast!
Brecks is a wonderful bulb company; I have their catalog and
the bulbs are a good size so I'm not surprised that you are
eagerly awaiting them. They will be gorgeous.
Best,
June

Hi Alan,
Hope you and Julie have a good time Sunday. I'll have to check in and
see your chair. When you buy the bulbs from Brecks, do they already
pre-chill them for you or do you have to do that yourself? I was
wondering because I was thinking maybe I'd get a few for FL--although
probably I should just buy them at a store down there--that way I'm sure
they would be ready to plant.

Hi All, Re: planting the bulbs you get from Brecks -
I just buy bulbs and plant them in the fall. They have a
chance to set roots before the chill hits and will bloom the
following year. But I am in zone 6 - Rhode Island.
I would call Brecks on their toll-free number and ask them
directly. Someone ought to be able to give some good
advice. They are a known company.
Best,
June
