leaving ant colonies beneath vegies....

I've heard a few horror stories, but anyone have any _successful_ outcomes
of leaving ant colonies beneath their vegies? I just transplanted my
tomaotes, and one was above a red ant colony of some kind. They didn't
attack me, just ran like crazy, so I decided to leave them be. (I always
give insects benefit of the doubt till proven otherwise. These might be the
same ants which chewed the stems of my asparagus beans last year, but maybe
not.)

I generally leave ants alone, also, unless they are herding aphids, they they
get some water treatment or soap, or just wait for help from ladybugs, but when
ants are herding the aphids, they fight off other insects. I read that ants eat
a tremendous amount of weed seeds.
