I think agave cactus has formic acid, as welll.
Only topically applied( as opposed to "injected" like nettle is) it causes
an intense itching pain that lasts a good half hour. That's w/ constant
showering of alternating hot and cold water( ph 8) and soaping , scrubbing,
rinsing down. It's contained through out the plant.
DOn't ever chop down an agave cactus in shorts, sandals, shortsleeve shirt.
Cover up from head to toe in a disposable poly overalls( 6$ at the paint
store) or long sleeve work clothes, boots, long socks(2 pairs) scarves, etc.
to cover up all skin. Use duct tape( or first aid tape) to seal around
glove openings and around pant legs to work boots.

Hi, urtica diaica ( stinging nettle ) has formic acid,

John
Of course you are right. In fact I believe it IS actually phormic acid
in nettles.
I wonder how the dock leves work then, because they certainly do.

Neighbor and I were hacking away w/ machetes at a big blue spiky agave-
pulp was flying everywhere. All of a sudden I got this overwhelming itch
that started to "consume" me. I've never ran so fast into the
shower/stripping my clothes after getting in.
Neighbor knew better( an had warned me) and was adequately protected.
