Hi everyone:
It took me a few days to look up the taxonomy of the allium family. I don't
have this stuff at my fingertips without an occasional review. Old age
seting in. This is in regard to bunching onions etc, that some people have
been asking about.
Allium fistulosum - bunching onions: form at most a small bulb
A cepa cepa - all ordinary onions
A cepa aggregatum - consisting of 1) the root group which includes the
multiplier onions, potato onions and shallots as well as the 2) top set
group of which only the egyptian multiplier onion come to mind
A tuberosum - garlic chives
A schoenoprasum - common chives
A sativum var(iety) sativum - the ordinary store garlics, Ca type garlic
A sativum var ophioscorodon - the older variety of garlic, more suitable
for growing in colder climates
A porrum - leeks
A spp. including all flowering alliums and e.g. A tricoccum which is
honered with a festival in the NC (?) area.
