mutzu apples

I finally got my courage to complain at the fruit market because the =
last
few years their mutzu have been so green that they never ripen. I wanted =
to
buy some but I was faced with a bin of small green things that they were
calling mutzu. I'm skeptical about the story I was given but elements =
ring
true. The "apple person" says that there are two strains of mutzu and =
one
of them never turns yellow.

He said they were lucky and got the good yellow strain when they first
planted and the apples have grown in popularity. The crop that they =
pick
from their own orchard goes into cold storage and they know how much =
they
use. Any excess over their cold storage requirements goes directly for =
sale
but it isn't very much. Then they have to fill with apples from other
orchards until they open cold storage in mid-January, and a couple of =
the
local orchards, when they added Mutzu, got the green strain. What rings
true about this is that I used to be able to get apples from them after =
mine
were over and it's just the last few years that they are small and =
green.
He says the green strain of Mutzu never turn ripe, even if you leave =
them on
the tree until they rot.

He seemed like a nice enough person and I told him that I grew them =
myself
so it doesn't seem like he would think that he could just tell me =
anything.

Even more bothered by the fact that he can sell all of these that he can
get, he says. Green, sour, hard things. Maybe people use them like =
Granny
Smiths?

Have any of you heard such a thing?
