While building a new compost pile this afternoon, Husband uncovered a nest
of snake eggs. Neighbor said they were the eggs of the black snake, so
Husband was careful to re-cover them. Interesting shape -- oblong. We'd
never seen snake eggs before.

I found my first snake egg in a chicken laying box. In the past 6 years, we
have found three eggs laid among the chicken eggs. On the first one, I
called the local Extension office as I had never seen one and it looked like
an egg whose shell hadn't formed.

Thirty years ago when our sons were young, we would pick up box turtles that
we found crossing the road and bring them home for the vegetable garden. We
did find a few low-hanging tomatoes with a bite taken out but it was fun to
move a plant and find one of the turtles. I remember that the large one was
Paul Bunyon. When we were working through the compost pile and turning it
to a new location that next Spring, we found 4 turtle eggs buried under the
pile which we quickly reburied.

Um.., not a good sign, I should think. Were you missing some chickens, or
finding fewer hen eggs?

One of our cats drew my attention to what I at first thought was a lizard,
in the corner of the shed among some stakes and poles. It was the tail end
of a very long black snake, making its way up to the loft, using the poles
as its means of travel.

We tried that, but they wouldn't stay in the garden. Sometimes we find
frogs. We do have a water source for them, but I guess it's not enough to
keep them.

Not missing any chickens but we have lost three solid wood fake eggs that
came from Hobby Lobby and I imagine that some snakes have had a serious case
of indigestion. I do have a black snake (rat snake) in the sheep barn that
is watching over the field mouse/rat population.

I used to do that, too, but they made escapes. I guess I needed one of
each sex, that were friendly!

Tried that, too, but frogs and toads are territorial, I think They
don't like to be moved. I moved my resident toad from my cold frame to
the garden because I thought he would starve when i took all the
plants out, but found him, I guess it was him back the next day.
