zoyza grass

Does anyone have an opinion on Zoyza grass. I want to redo my lawn this
spring, and have read a lot of good things about it. But, I don't know
anyone who has it so I was hoping to find an opinion from someone with
first hand experience with it.

Thanks for your feedback . . Andy Wood

Andy,

In our area we used the grass in our dog pen. The grass grows very well for
us. It does stay brown longer in the spring than other grass. But, we
couldn't afford sod, and the zoysia has taken very well. It sends out
feeler/spreader things.

So, for us it is a great thing.

Have had it for years. It's tough and long-lived, doesn't need mowing as
often, stays green in drought and squeezes out some (not all) weeds. It
stays brown until the soil is very warm and goes brown at the first touch
of frost. I like it for lawn, but it is a devil to weed out of the garden
beds as it creeps by underground runners. Don't put it anywhere near your
garden or else install an underground edging when you put the zoysia in.

Back in the 50s, my mother and I succumbed to an ad for Meyer Zoysia and
bought some of that expensive grass. We plugged it in a lawn in a weedy
St Augustine lawn in a suburb of Jacksonville and 30 years later it
hadn't covered much more territory. If someone looked hard for it today,
they would still probably find remnants of it.

Hi Andy,

My dad put some patches of Zoyza in his (zone 6) yard (probably 30 years
ago, now...). He thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, but I've
never liked it. It goes brown fairly early in winter or during drought, and
it is hard/sharp on bare feet. I guess it's supposed to be resilient, and
has spread to overtake most of my mom's yard now... but in 30 years, I would
hope so... I don't believe it has taken over the whole yard, actually. Like
someone else said though, it does tend to creep into the gardens.

Some people love it, but I've always wondered why my dad liked it so much. I
never really took to gardening much until after his death in 1984... too
bad, we would have so much to talk about together if he was still around
today!

Hope this helps with your decision.
