<< Sue, I wish we had a program for fixing feral cats. We don't. When we
rescued Nakita, I bought a spay certificate $50. The vet here wouldn't
accept it so I had to drive to the other side of Birmingham to find a vet
who said he would. When I picked up Nakita, he handed me a bill for $100.
I reminded him I had already given him the certificate and he said, "I don't
make money off of those. Do you really expect me to spay an animal for only
$50?" The bill was for anesthesia, boarding, food, antibiotics.... all
padded up. >>

We have just tons of people doing animal rescue up here. And my vet is a real
sweetheart. He will do the spaying and neutering for these people for free. I
think he charged me only $75 for the last cats I had spayed, and less for
neutering. Maybe he thinks because I have a lot of cats I can't afford more.

For an operation that takes about three minutes apart from administering the
anesthetic it still beats most jobs I have ever done.

Well, he doesn't do one an hour, every hour. He has to pay his vet techs,
fuel, taxes,
mortgage, equipment, supplies etc. I think it's very reasonable.

Well, yes and also I do not think it is good for ones peace of mind to do
that kind of thing too often.
I am never looking forward to the yearly castrating of ram lambs but I am
still glad I can do a good job at about 40 per hour without having to pay
$75 per head.

My goodness. I'd go to the veterinary licensing authority, and also
to whoever issues the certs, and tell them this story.

We are cutting back every year. This year we have about 40 sheep lambing. So
far 36 have produced 48 lambs. We used to have more than double that number.
