Okay, I finally heard from my arborist friend with whom I had had a
conversation about vaseline on tree trunks. This tree expert is Nicole
Stewart, and she and Bob are still moving back into their house, but the
crummy weather has delayed garden restoration. She said one shouldn't be
upset about ants climbing into trees unless they're carpenter ants. If
they are carpenter ants, you'd better call in a tree expert who can deal
with the invasion according to state law.

Many thanks for tracking this down, Margaret. Flora
Thank you Margaret! I always wondered why the trunks on the trees at the
Legion had those dark discolored rings around them. The previous
groundskeeper must have applied it directly during our gypsy moth outbreak.
(I'm applying for the groundskeeper job there--wish me luck everyone! That
will be a fun way to supplement the retirement income.)

Good luck Lee Ann. If one must work, it is good to find a fun job. :-)
