There used to be a clipped hedge of Chaenomales down the road from me.
It was that variety with red blossoms and would produce these not just
on the outside of the hedge, but right through the interior among the
very dark twigs. I thought it was a most beautiful sight every winter
when it flowered on the leafless wood and the whole hedge seemed to glow.
Alas, the garden changed hands and the incomer pulled the hedge out. I
guess it took a fair bit of effort to keep it tidy.
