HI Patti -
I love blackberries! We had some here growing by the roadside,
but the neighbor cleaned up his property and the "brambles"
with it. I would pick a cupful and have them with my cereal.
I know I can buy them, but they were reminiscent of
childhood picking them and eating them.
Blackberry question - are they bi-annual in producing
the berries? It seemed they weren't consistant, but
they were wild so I don't know. Most of the berries were
on the new canes.

Hi June,

I have blackberries in a small patch at the back of my garage. I have an
arbor over them, and train the stems up/around/through that. Every fall, I
cut off the stems that had fruit, and leave about 3 new growth stems to
produce fruit the following year. If I didn't prune like this, it would get
nuts... much too big for the space it's in.

My blackberries aren't anywhere near ripe yet. I still have blossoms
showing, and fruits are green. Ours are very seedy, so dh isn't thrilled
with them...and I'm not a real berry lover anyway. I really mostly use them
for jam... have had good success de-seeding and making jam from the juice.
Also sometimes use them in daiquiris.

I did get my first golden raspberry yesterday. I have a little (so far it's
little) clump in my side-yard from stems my letter carrier gave me. Nice
guy. He said his got out of control and spread everywhere... I'm hoping to
keep mine in check by pruning.

Hi Peg,
That sounds just right. I do love nature's
free bounty - just growing by itself and producing
something I like - I'd love a fruit tree but I
know in advance how much work they are and
that the birds harvest the fruit too.

But as soon as I figure out where to put some
of the great things to grow, I'll get back to them.

I managed to get two days of perfect vacation weather
and was able to do my July pruning without the temps
being 100F. :) Some years have been brutal in July -
and we are down on the water supply - but the air
is just marvelous here - the breezes perfect - and
my little garden is doing well.

Hi again, June,

Yep... it's been pretty nice lately, hasn't it? Today's another winner. I
should get out and accomplish some garden stuff before the humidity comes
back tomorrow.

We've planted a couple of small (one dwarf, one semi-dwarf) apple trees and
some blueberries and grapes. Too soon to see any fruit yet, maybe next
year? The blackberries were here when we bought the place. So those are
freebies. We had 2 plum trees, but they got some kind of blight, and never
really produced well after 1999. So they're HISTORY! Too bad... they were
pretty.

Well, gotta go garden.

Happy 4th weekend to all! Glad to hear Deirdre enjoyed the trip! Come again
sometime and make a phone call next time.
