Does anyone use something other than the cocoa liners for hanging baskets?
I feel they take up a lot of room and aren't really efficient for holding
water in.
Any ideas?

I use sphagnum moss, in thick layers. It grows all over the place here so it
is free. Holds water nicely and holds soil right in the wires as well.

Hi,
I have no experience with this tip but I read in one of my gardening
mags that the writer used burlap purchased at the fabric store. Said it
was much cheaper and worked better. Just a thought. Robin in western Mass.

I thought I remembered someone mentioning using material from an old pair of
jeans stitched to the basket.
I think burlap would look a lot more natural in the baskets.

I think the moss would fall out of my baskets, they're a pretty open weave.
Plus it's NOT free here.

I tried that. the burlap moulded and then wicked the moisture away from the
roots. FWIW

wish you were closer. I could provide a truck load. naturally you can get it
up in almost sheets so it doesn't fall apart as the dried stuff does.

I think the orchard director just used black plastic to line some really
huge hanging baskets. If you cover it with enough stuff it doesn't =
matter.
His baskets weren't an enormous success last year but it's hard to say =
that
the lining had anything to do with it. He hung them on a porch with no
light in the back of the basket and full sun in the front. They were
symmetrical so the sun loving stuff thrived in the front and died out in =
the
back and vice versa.

A tip from a gardening program suggests putting the moss in first and then
use a plastic garbage bag for an inner liner. Less water evaporation and you
can poke a couple of drainage holes. I like the idea of old carpet. I
don't relish the idea of constant daily watering in sunny locations.

I hadn't tried that. I could soon as I just found a couple old frames in the
barn. I have some of the newest purple petunia seed, left from one of the
nurseries. I like that new compact variety, it hangs quite nicely!
You can keep that cool weather there, Marion. It has stopped raining and we
have had a not bad day. Now some warm for the poor hummingbirds would be
very nice.

Depending on the plant/plants
I use an old shopping bag, the thick sort with a hessian lining for
maiden hair fern, for others I just use 2 layers of the hessian.
For orchids, i use strips of bark to hold the orchids mix. For others i
have experimented with mixed successes. Old carpet. preferably wool
colored side in.
Seaweed well washed.
There is a paper bark tea tree here which is excellent. basically i use
anything organic that is slow to break down and can span the wires of
the hanging basket
