salt and ivy roots?

I've been wondering whether salt rubbed on ivy roots would kill the ivy.
Has anyone ever tried it? I don't know the botanical names for the kind of
ivy my neighbors have but it's the virulent kind that seems impervious to
attack of any kind and roots itself into wooden fences, trees...

Salt will work, but the soil is ruined.

Acetic acid (vinegar acid) also works, but it doesn't ruin the soil.

Digging is the best, but they will come back (I know the problem; I also have neighbors). I dig.
