First you get a can of white spray paint ....

Well, even a striped cat should be easier to photograph than a pure black
one. ;-)

It is all in the light control, Esther. Try to have lights shining on the
walls & surfaces behind the cat so that the light is reflecting off the
walls. In addition, bouncing the light from your strobe will also help.

How do you get a picture of a black cat? I have several pictures of two
lovely green eyes in a shadow, some glints of wiskers and you can even
see some detail in one picture of the inside of his ears.

Thanks, Maybe a medium or darkish wall would help (as if he would
actually pose!). I got his outline in all of the shots just no
features. There must be some way to tell it to differentiate between
tones of black. I might actually have to read the book that came with
the camera.

Hit cat in head with rubber hammer, while unconcious stretch him out on a sheet of white paper. Snap
picture of outline of black cat, be satisfied with what you have. Don't try this with a white cat
unless you have black paper.

You need to set the camera for neutral colors to set the shutter speed
then switch to him to take the picture. (Maybe focus then switch to
manual, if your camera has a manual setting.)
Or, rather than using the whole image option to focus, use the center
point option to focus -- that center point is something medium and he's
off to one side or the other.
Elsewise take a picture of him in a dark setting with good lighting.
Sidelight will bring out his features. Flash straight on will flatten
him out.

Oh yeah, we flashed, and he hardly blinked. He was on my desk, a very
safe place in his mind. Everything around him is shown in great detail.
I got a new memory card for my digital camera so I was just running the
camera through its paces to make sure it worked and he was there in
front of me. Other than the color problem he was a good subject. Too
aloof to care what I was doing.
Good news is that I can take over 500 pictures now before I have to
download to a PC. Before it was 16!

Can you play with where the automatic meter is taking the reading? Eg focus
on something other than the cat then swing over to him -- try for something
not too dark and not too white.
