poison ivy update

Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions about the poison ivy. I'm
afraid though that I had to give in and get a prednisone shot today. One eye
is swollen to a mere crack and the other is halfway closed. Chills sealed
the deal. I imagine that if I hadn't taken all the herbal supplements, I
would be much worse off. Right now I'm interchanging warm compresses with
aloe gel (not on my eye but on the face which is now 100% covered in rash.)
I'm finding that prednisone makes me very sick to my stomach so I'm heading
for the couch and a nap in a minute.

I lost three good days of garden work but hopefully I'll be back out there
tomorrow. The big thing is to find where I got that poison ivy! It hasn't
leafed all out yet so I imagine that is how I managed to get such a bad
case. Its even on the palms of my hand and in my hairline now

What fun!

Laura, you probably won't see this in time to help, but I've known three =
who took Prednisone: my dog, my friend's husband who had just had a =
heart transplant and my ex-SIL. It makes you very thirsty (probably why =
you're nauseated), and my poor tiny dog was embarrassed that he widdled =
a crooked line to the door. My SIL had to have cataract surgery because =
of the steroids. Come to think of it, another friend who "collected =
those nice viny things with white berries" on a hike also had to have =
Prednisone. Nothing dire happened to her afterward... Hope all is well =
very soon. Margaret L

I'm afraid they are all over, mostly, although when we lived in Montana
there wasn't any there. It is called poison oak in the western states
where it can grow like a tree with a trunk and ivy in the eastern
states where it vines all over everything. It has a berry that the
birds eat and spread the seeds around, too. very nasty!! and they are
Rhus, too

Laura
Tony and I are most sympathetic about your plight. You seem to be
suffering quite horribly and even taking the prednisone seems not to be
a comfortable solution as you say it gives you nausea. It sounds to us
fairly essential to your quick recovery though. We do hope anyway it
brings this horrible episode to a close.

Thankfully poison ivy and oak are not local hazards in NZ. I don't think
that we have anything comparable either, apart perhaps from a very
ferocious and quite dangerous nettle shrub (Urtica ferox) which is
relatively rare around cultivated areas and easily recognized. The only
things which might achieve similarly nasty reactions here to your poison
plants are I suppose some insect stings or spider bites and these would
be extremely rare.. I wonder if these poison plants of yours (Both Rhus
spp I think) occur throughout the States or only in certain areas (The
warmer ones maybe???)
