Gosh, at least you son knows they have lids and just ignores. My son thinks
the garbage fairy come to hour house. Dear old dad, always slugging away,
bless his black little heart.

Far better to train the son than try to change the instincts & nature of
an animal. "If you give them food, they will come."
You're lucky the animal visitor isn't a bear as it would be here.
Besides, possums are gentle (until cornered), shy & harmless
critters that also eat slugs, grubs et. al..
Just think .... if you can't train him to securely close the garbage can
lid (try making him do the clean up himself ~ as well as you would or
better) how will he learn responsibility about other things (e.g.,
condoms ... also too much trouble??)? At least with the garbage
can lid his life or that of a child doesn't depend upon it.

HA! My "boy" just turned 20! Forgetting about the garbage is allegedly a
project in Psych 101. Testing mothers in yet another hideous way and
recording the effects (fallout, I should say!!!)
<< Boys!!! thats

No, I think they'll eat anything and everything, even raw clams. :)
Anji, I vote with retraining your son, too...although not for the same
reason.
That 'possum is filling a niche, and some other animal will scavenge in your
trash if you do manage to get rid of the possum. Personally, I prefer
possums...they're neat eaters, for omnivores.
Since he enjoys playing, make it fun. Some time of apparatus might
help...like bungee cords linking the top and bottom...he can lift to toss in
the trash and the lid will snap back on with a maximum of noise.
Or...create targets with paint...he could practice lid frisbee with the
trash can as goal.

If you want mine you are perfectly welcome to come get it... Or if you are too far and have a son you could have him do the trash, but make sure he wears his condom....... Anji --- Kathleen Wallden wrote:

Welcome, Kathleen. You really don't want a possum. They dig up newly
planted stuff looking for grubs and leave all your roots exposed. And
they stink! When one comes through the garden I'm ready to tear my hair
out because I have to try to re-plant and put dirt around everything
they've uprooted. Last year I lost a bunch of new transplants because
the possum(s) kept digging them up looking for bugs for several days
before they moved on.

This is a multipart message in MIME format. 02/06/01 03:17 PM Well you can trap one, but once you let him out, he's gone. I've never heard of anyone domesticating a possum. Most people want to get rid of them. If you really want to keep something that eats slugs, get a duck. Much less trouble. John
