Blackberries can indeed be grown from root pieces. Did you buy the root
piece from a fruit nursery, or a source of dried herbs? If the former, you
have a legitimate gripe with them for sending you something dried up, though
blackberry nursery stock is usually small plants, not just a root cutting.
If you want blackberries, respond privately and I can help.

Hi
Silly question time. I'm new to the list, new to gardening, and have a
question. I ordered blackberry root thinking this is something that I plant
and then a blackberry bush grows. Well, the root looks nothing like what I
had pictured in my mind and I suspect it is used as some type of herb. Could
anyone enlighten me about this cut and dried root sitting on my desk? I would
be grateful for any insight. If it is indeed to be used as an herb, is there
a recipe or something I can use it for?
Thanx
Nancy
