Mine are the purplish pink ones, 3 or 4 years old, get about 2' diameter
and have never self-seeded or spread. I don't know what the climate's like
in WNY, but they wouldn't do well in overcast conditions as the flowers
open only in sun, and close again before dusk. I'm surprised Karen's
didn't overwinter. They're supposed to be hardy to usda 5. I seldom do
fall clean up - wonder if the dead plants insulate/protect the roots? I
have 5, have lost nary a one, tho one was stunted this year, I think by a
colony of ants that were dug under it. Same with a sedum 'autumn joy'.
One right next to it is about 18" tall, but the one with ants is only about
4". I didn't have baby powder so used Shower to Shower. It took a couple
applications, but both ant colonies are gone.

My iceplants were in a very exposed location. Full sun in my yard also
means they got the full effects of winter with nothing to shield them. I
was in FL in winter so I don't know exactly what went on, but I had some
buddleia die all the way back to the roots last year too - a first for
me. We must have had a few real cold days with no snow cover. Lack of
snow cover is what seems to cause the problem here. My old cannas that
had been overwintering for the past 7+ years bit the dust too and I lost
one Bonica shrub rose this past winter. The vagaries of weather.
