first snake of the season

I don't know what kind it is. I look like a night crawler only about five
or six times as large with an oval head and round eyes. I have a mat placed
next to one of my cold frames for sitting on. I picked it up to move it
before sitting on it. Good thing for the snake! I suppose we'd better get
the forest jobs done soon because I don't like working out there when the
copper heads and, worse, the timber rattlers are out.

Winds are gusting to about 40 mph here. The trees are creaking. I wish I
had taken some of those pines down ten years ago. They are very tall (80
feet) and spindly. I suppose we'll be fixing the fence this weekend.
We're expecting severe weather this afternoon so the schools are closing in
about 10 minutes. I was supposed to drive Sean into a meeting for
Presbyterian Youth Council but don't want to make the 40 mile drive in
severe weather so we're going to stay home.
