contemplating amaryllis

Lovely plant it is! When one leaf shoot appears, it grows for about 3 days, and when it is about an inch and a half, the second leaf starts growing right against it, until it is tall enough to begin to separate. All this before my very eyes!

And the flower shoots - wow! They grow about an inch a day, start at the outside of the leaf shoots, but in three days are perpendicular to the leaf shoots, so that the flower clusters balance with the leaves and the plant doesn't topple over.

Even in the dead of winter (pretty warm though!) there are things to look at.

Today I potted the latest amaryllis, pot and all, in a large clay pot with even some compost in it. Might as well use natural compost as organic (purchased) compost for my potted plants.
