Feeling rather foolish, because I realized as soon as I woke up today that these shoots have about 10 feet of viril cane backing them up, giving them energy, etc. If I cut off 2 inches of cane, the shoot would certainly not sprout.
However, I think this is how I got my current blackberry jungle, only I put the cane end in the ground. Strangely enough they took, though my biggest cane didn't take so I threw it behind me. Then it took off, right at the base of my sour cherry tree, and is now so big it acts like kudzu, so I get lots and lots of blackberries and no cherries!
