Hello folks,
The following site may be of interest to some of you...
http://www.invasive.org/eastern/
I confess that I introduced afew of these to my family's land back in my
plant explorer days (when I brought home any"pretty" plant I could find
growing wild)

BTW On a different topic, have any of you VA folks ever visited the "Edible
Landscaping" nursery ? I ordered an apricot tree, bush cherry and red
raspberry as an Easter present for my folks this year.

Funny you should ask! I was there about two weeks ago. Beautiful =
setting
in the mountains, in Nelson County. Extensive selection, very healthy
plants, and knowledgeable and friendly staff.
I bought a black currant plant, a jostaberry plant, and a shrub =
juneberry.
I wanted a shrub mulberry but that was among a group in the greenhouse =
not
ready for outdoor planting; I'll return for that, and probably a few =
more
items, at the end of this month. As for the bush cherries, I had just
bought two of them from a local garden center which got them from the
Virginia Berry Farm, the location of which I haven't been able to =
determine.
Thanks for the website on invasive plants. That topic seems to have =
become
one of my obsessions since moving here in 1998....

NZ has about 2000 exotic plants that have become established in the wild and
it is estimated about 200 of these will become weeds. This means that they
will place natives under threat, 75% of these have been introduced by man.
Probably the first and indeed the worst is gorse, Ulex europaeus, introduced
by the early settlers and now covers the hills and pasture, both of which we
have many. Nz is the first country to introduce a study to eliminate gorse
through biological methods.
Australian and NZ plants do not do so well out of their own environment.
Hawaii has our Karaka tree and our native flax to contend with. Also manuka,
leptospermum has become invasive in some places but manuka honey is becoming
a desired commodity so this could be a good thing. Leone
