snow & hollies /now poison ivy

updated fri 3 feb 06

The birds around me eat the poison ivy seeds and they get planted in my lawn
from their droppings. I garden with my arms and legs covered as I am very
allergic to it. I also use a cream preventative on my hands and face.

If you just wash with TECNU after exposure to PI you won't get it... seems a
simpler preventive method...

And they have a preparation you can apply before possible exposure, too...

I've seen it, never tried it, have you?

Didn't this start by someone saying they use a preparation before they
garden?

And the circles, they go round and round...

No, I feel like I'm very poison ivy aware and would rather just use the
Tecnu when I think I've been exposed. If I were going on a long hike where I
knew I'd have to encounter it and not be able to wash it off in 4 hours or
so I might try it, though.

The PI preventive cream I use is Restore Barrier Creme skin protectant made
by Hollister. It has no odor and is invisible when applied. As I am somewhat
disabled I sit on the grass and lean as far as I can so I sometimes expose a
large amount of skin. Showering with just warm water and mild soap after also
seems to keep me free from PI. I always sit on an old foam water float on the
grass. I also get it from dogs and firewood if I am careless and don't check
it and wash immediately after putting it in the woodstove. Now newer house
has no stove and our dog is no longer living.

You know they say that you can use TECNU up to 8 hours (!!) after exposure
and it will work... but I wonder if that really works for those who are
extra allergic.... all I know is that it worked for me, and it was many
hours after exposure the first time I used it. Now that I've been exposed
and come down with it several times in the last few years, I think I am
probably highly allergic.

Not me . Well, maybe "work" is a relative term. I use TECHNU
religiously, whether I think I was exposed to PI or not. But much of =
the
summer I will have a blister here or there on my hands or arms. I =
suspect
it has to do with absorption into the skin and the small scratches that
hands get from hard work let the oils into the skin quickly.

I don't even use Technu, just wash well with soap and water and put
gardening clothes directly in washer. That works the best. I get the
worst PI problems from the oil that has transferred to shoes, clothes and
of course my dogs. Luckily we live on a lake and dogs swim constantly so
it dilutes the oil a good bit. I try to Roud Up every tad of PI and that
is the very best remedy. i also havew fending that keeps the dogs o n our
15 acres which I police regularly.

Libba - I saturate my shoes, tools, gloves with TECNU if I have to. ve been
exposed... I once spent several hrs literally walking about in an ocean
of 18" high PI plants... could not avoid them... this in a wooded parkland
in the Bronx where I was helping do a hort/botany survey - arghhh -- won't
forget that day. The folks in the lab gave me a bottle of TECNU to take
home. I put a big black contractor's trash bag on the seat of my car so as
not to transfer the oils that were all over me... --- home, got into the
tub, slathered TECNU on my clothes, stripped, slathered it on my body...
rinsed everything with cool water... then clothes went into the washing
machine by themselves... did not get PI. This is what made me worship
TECNU! ;o) Ofcourse, I also spray every little tendril of PI that I see
with R-U and get rid of the dead stuff putting my hand in a plastic bag and
turning the plant inside out, so to speak... you knwo what I mean, right?
