I have a Christmas cactus about 6 inches high. It hasn't bloomed for me =
though. Do I need to do anything special with it like with =
pointsettias?

I've just been watering it when it needs it and giving it a tiny bit of =
fertilizer once a month or so.

Ah, added to yesterday's little list, I have
been out in the yard and the daffodils are
coming right up. I did hardly more than put
down a bag of top soil to cover them and left
them in a mound. But they did survive their
shallow planting and are doing fine.

There were a pair of robins out bobbing
along on the still cold grass, but it did
look like they were finding food to eat.

The next two days will be a bit cold, but
they will swiftly pass. Inside, my
lovely Christmas cactus is blooming on
one side. I bought this plant at Christmas
and it bloomed on one side only. Later, it
bloomed on the other side. Now it is
blooming on on side again. The colors of
the blooms are the same and the species
look to be the same, but I think it is
two plants in the one pot. No mind though,
I get twice the flowers and they are always
welcome.

How old is the plant? Are you getting lots of new growth?
I might back off the fertilizer a bit, maybe if it isn't actually blooming,
and see what happens. I find if I change their expectations they will
sometimes come into bloom
I have 5 or 6 (not a huge collection that is for sure) nice ones and not all
bloom at Christmas, some bloom closer to Easter. One, the colour of old lace
blooms more into September. I am not an expert by a long shot, but know mine
like to be indirect bright light and coolish if possible. Someone in this
group used to have a fair bit of info on these plants. I love them they are
so cheerful.

Hi Marilyn, they need cool temps for a couple of months. My sister =
(also
Marilyn) is the expert between us. I googled for instructions and this =
was
the first thing I found:

http://leon.ifas.ufl.edu/how_to_make_your_christmas_cactu.htm He says =
dark
_or_ cool will do it. No way we can leave them outside here!

Seems like we had a thread on this since the list had archives, where =
people
who had first hand experience, as opposed to my second hand knowledge
responded.

I bought a very nice "Christmas" cactus over the
holidays and half was in bloom. A lovely shade
of orchid. Now the other half is blooming.
There are three kinds of cactus - and they have
different leaves. Some bloom at this time and
are called the "Easter" cactus.
I had a small cactus in a very large pot and it
didn't bloom until it grew enough to fill the
pot.

They are well worth their space.
