Hi All,
This has been an eventful gardening season for me. Three
things that I had almost given up the hope of fruit or flowers
surprised me. At least 3 years ago I bought and planted the
blue lace cap hydrangea and although it didn't die, it didn't
quite catch on either.
At least 5 years ago I had planted a peony that came up each
year with no flowers.
And finally, at least 10 years ago (maybe longer) I bought
two apple tree saplings that I planted together at the end of
the lot.
Finally the hydrangea put forth three flowers! And grew a least
a foot.
The peony put out one flower but that better than nothing and
I was happy with that.
And finally, the apple trees had a few blossoms and one of the
trees grew one red small apple. Only one. But I picked it
and ate it and planted the core. I'm still laughing.
It was so funny just to see the one small red apple on the
tree. I have no idea if it crossed with its companion apple
tree of a different species, or if it picked up on the
ornamental crab tree in the front yard. But the apple was
OK and if I got a lot of them, would definitely make a good
pie apple.
If the tree had grown apples the very first time, I might have
missed the grand moment when I actually picked and ate one of
my own apples. :)
June in zone 6 (who would know enough now to de-ball the root
system if planting a sapling, and plant two of the same kind of
apple trees too.)
