leaves, shovels and slugs

Walker,
the coal/grain shovel sounds like a good idea. I've also found the snow
shovel works well for scraping the last dregs of compost, wood chips,
etc. off of smooth ground or the driveway.

I tried some fall brassicas this year. they did ok, but I put half of
them out with screen barriers (little bands of aluminum screen wrapped
around the stems) and half without. The ones with the screens were
almost slug free, I lost two of them. The ones without screens were
chewed by the slugs.
