I was told that the makers of Sluggo have a product called "Cats Begone" (I
think). Has anyone on the list heard of/tried it?

No, cruelty to animals.
Haven't hear of this product, but two products that are extremely successful
are the Contech Motion Activated Sprinkler and the Transonic Yard Protector.

A humane alternative to the mouse trap tactic mentioned might be something
like the Jumpo Bird Trainer.

I doubt the average mousetrap would do more than scare a cat. When I was
not yet four years old I went fossicking illegally in my mother's pantry
and when I put my hand up on to a high shelf I caught my fingers in a
mousetrap. Well, it certainly gave me an awful fright, but I can't
remember it hurting much at all, even for a baby like I was. All I
remember thinking was I mustn't be found out, being where I shouldn't,
so I pulled my finger out of it and put it back on the shelf. I guess
the grownups were later surprised to find the trap sprung!
I NZ we can get a local product called Skunk Stop which combines the
essence of skunk with a petroleum base. This when smeared on someting
like an iceblock stick stuck in the ground repels both dogs and cats. To
human noses it has a faint odour for about 24 hours after which we can
no longer smell it, but to the pets it remains smelly up to three or
four weeks and is most effective. it only works apparently to repel
carnivores, and would be useless for instance against rabbits, but I
guess it would most likely work, now I come to think of it, against the
carnivorous mole.
We do also have a chemical which is sold here as gellied granules to put
around plants. Sorry, I can't at present remember its name, but it is
pretty well ueless, because the effects do not last at all long -two or
three days at most. if you can tell me what is in your Cat Begone i can
easily find out if this is the same chemical.

Bill,
Your carpet tack strips suggestion was very timely. The apartment where my
mother lives has little apartment balconies that have been taken over by
pigeons (I just came back from visiting her). It's the first time I had ever
seen pigeons on Mom's balcony. They had been perching on the balcony light
and their droppings were all over the chair sitting underneith. One lady had
put a flower frog on top of her light - the kind with lots of sharp pins -
to deter them
One apartment owner had put a "scare crow" lady on their balcony and then
went south for the winter. The pigeons loved her and nested in her hat! The
apartment manager finally had to send a cleanup crew into their apartment,
and she had to use a shovel to pick up all the mess they had created. We
were discussing this with some of the residents Saturday and I suggested
your tack strip idea to deter them from perching on the railings. Thanks for
the idea.
