Yes please June,
Please post both recipes. They sound very good.
2 stories about condensed milk.
When I was a kid we used to steal condensed milk from kitchen. We would eat
half, then add some butter and boil in the tin over a fire till it made
toffee. Of course fires were totally forbidden in the bush but we neverhad
an accident - luckily.
My kids used to steal it from our kitchen. For awhile I would peel off the
label, ditto soup labels, diff. size- but kids soon caught on to that.
Then I started making my own.
1cup dried milk
1 cup boiling water
2/3 cup white sugar
2 Tablsp butter/marge
pinch salt
Blend well.
It is thinner than the tinned stuff but tastes the same in recipes
Used to make my own shake & bake too. The kids used to take it to do who
knows what with it - rabbits/groundhogs/ducks/ Was always running out of
it, just when needed for a quick supper.
Ginny, who wonders how many people June feeds with all her good baking
Hi Ginny,
What darling stories!
We weren't as creative -- we used to take potatoes
out in the back, dig a hole, make a little fire, and
bake them. This was a very big deal.
And we took my mother's good blanket, drove wooden closepins
into the corners after we stretched it over the clothesline
and made a tent.
Ah, toffee! I'll look and see what I got. I know some
of the pumpkin cheese cakes like condensed milk IIRC.
It's sweeter than evaporated.
I sampled today's cake and now I will take the cake to my
mother's house tomorrow. There it will disappear in a very
short time. I put it in the fridge for now and not out
on the counter where I would soon take another tiny (or not
so tiny) sliver. :)
I had a big breakfast, finished off the chili for lunch, and now I'm
just having orange juice. I'm full. The only problem I find with
rustling up my own grub is that I have to be creative with the
leftovers too. So I cook in smaller quantities. Most recipes
are for about four people. :)
Good luck with your avocados!
June
But I quickly tired of eating out - long ago - and I like
to cook a few things.
