Ah yes, everyone thinks caffeine is safe in the garden. Lets see, the
LD50 for a me, should I eat pure caffeine, is about 2 tbs
Of course we can compare this to other poisons. To kill me 50% of the
time, it would take
100 tbs of Roundup (over two cups, pure, 10 quarts 5% solution)
100 tbs of Broditicoun (Rat Poison)
60 tbs table salt
30 tbs of Pyeen
25 tbs of Aspirin
2 tbs of DDT
And the very dangerous
1 tb of methylxanthine (an active ingredient in Chocolate)
So that makes DDT and Caffeine about as dangerous. And Chocolate much more
dangerous.
Of course, one can prove anything with statistics. The problem with DDT
is that, unlike caffeine, it does not break down easily. And a lb of
chocolate contains very little methylxanthine
Caffeine is produced by plants as an insecticide as is nicotine, aspirin
and even chocolate. So just remember, the next time you have a cup of
coffee and a few aspirin in the morning, a plant do not give a damn if you
have a headache, are tired or need a pickup after a little fun in the hay,
it is just trying to kill you.
