She suggested using a coffee filter in a small pot. I wonder if that
would last longer than newspaper? Newspaper would be cheaper. Always a
plus in my book :-)

I use coffee filters and, though they drain well, they also deteriorate very
quickly. I almost never see any remnants of the filter when I repot plants.
Mostly I use them just to keep the soil from coming out the hole when I'm
potting. After that, it stays in pretty well.

That would be fine for me, complete with the coffee grounds as a boost for the plant! I get 3 filters every day, so would be no cost.

I also get soil washing out of (only) small plants, but that washes off easily. What I don't like is the limestone deposit that builds up.
