There is a poisonous algae that sometimes comes close to Denmark's
beaches in summer, s?? that swimming is forbidden for a day or two until
it is cleaned away. It is a kind of green algae. Do you know anything
about it? It must be very poisonous if one cannot swim in an ocean when
it is about!

Hi Carol,
If one is going to be pedantic about it - the singular is "alga" plural
"algae" (Latin). So - strictly - one should write about "a poisonous
alga .....". B-)
I don't know about the one you write about, but for sure there are some
algae - we get them here - that infect the local /shellfish/ and cause
/their/ flesh to become poisonous to humans, although it does not appear
to harm the shellfish itself.
Maybe this is a similar problem to yours? What happens here is that when
we get a "bloom" (sudden vast increase in numbers) of this particular
alga in our coastal waters, the Ministry of Health issues warnings that
shellfish are NOT to be collected for eating from the areas affected.
