Hi all, my name is Serenity and
this is the first time I have
posted to
this list. I am pretty much a
veggie person, toms this year, but
I
inherited-this is a rental house
some gorgeous roses, among other
things. I, being the plant lover I
am, have nurtured and fertilized-no
pee yet!-all of the green babies.
My question is this: I have been
following the banana peel thread,
and

I was wondering how this applies to
labrador vermin!:) We have a big,
fat, black lab who eats anything.
I can't see using straight peels
under my straw mulch, cut I am not
sure how to compost them. How do I
do them separately from the regular
compost pile? Should I add a
couple
of compost scoops to the peels to
introduce the bacteria? Any other
dog
owners with good tips for gardening
with big ole dogs around who like
to
munch on anything organic? (last
year we had to fence in our veggies
because we finally figured out that
our plants were producing, but the
dog would pick and eat all of the
ripe veggies-mostly toms. We
couldn't
figure out why our plants looked so
happy, but were producing so
little!) TIA, Serenity

Hi Serenity
What a charming and unusual name. It smacks of the Pilgrim Fathers like
Hope Faith or Prudence, but I have never actually come across it before.
Regarding your banana peels, If you really want to put them straight on
to your bushes I can only suggest a circle of chicken wire over each pad
of straw might deter your very large "pest"!
However, I think you could derive as much good from them by putting them
in your regular compost heap and then giving the plants the
fully-prepared compost. You should never underestimate the goodies in
well-made compost and if enhanced by plenty of banana peels I am sure it
will suit your roses just as well as applying the skins directly.
