Many of you have had problems with deer, groundhogs and other 4-legged =
pests. I just read what they do in Africa to repel worse pests such as =
elephants and water buffalo: they plant a few rows of scorching hot =
chiles around a garden or field they don't want disturbed. Capsaicin =
heat from chiles scorches throats of all mammals, but for some reason =
birds are not affected. If I had deer problems, I think I'd grow a =
number of Mirasol chiles to plant around the perimeter, since Mirasols =
and Tabascos grow pointing up from the foliage rather than pendant =
within. Both are plenty hot. Getting them to a fruiting size before =
pests invade would be your main problem. Margaret L

Definitely a problem to get hot peppers here. Season too short, too =
cool;
too wet... Lots of insects that like them just fine. I've gotten =
decent
looking halepenos but anything bigger doesn't do well. Have grown some =
of
the really small decorative varieties but only in pots (which is why I =
know
that they will get chewed by insects). Not sure if they would have =
enough
heat to be a deterrent.

Or try urine-soaked cat litter.:-) The mice I had two weeks ago disappeared
shortly after eating the clumps of used cat litter I put out where they were
staying. No sign of their bodies around, and believe me, in this weather, if
they were dea,d I would know it.

Margaret,

Deer can be very selective about what they eat...perimeter plantings, in my
opinion, wouldn't do any good. I've seen them selectively eat things out of
herb gardens where you'd think the stronger smelling herbs would fool them.
The use of blood meal, in my experience, is a better choice because it makes
the desirable area smell undesirable. Unfortunately, other animals are
attracted to blood meal and it also needs to be replenished regularly.

A practical solution where a garden has clear boundaries. I've read simi=
lar
suggestions in permaculture books, about planting thorn bushes around one=
's
garden. Now picture 7 acres, the northern half of which contains scatter=
ed,
large islands of perennials and several separate, large sections of fruit=

trees and berry bushes. Why the deer mostly leave all this alone is bey=
ond
us, but they do and we're glad of it. The veg garden is another matter,
which is why the vegetables are grown only in one place, within an electr=
ic
fence.

Then there is the fact that many, many flowers, fruits, and vegs ripen
before the hot peppers. I guess the pepper plant idea would have to be o=
ne
of several strategies.

actually the deer would probably eat the plants long before they bore
fruit!
