slugs in the uk

Hello UK Gardeners,

I have an off-topic question for you...

While visiting your beautiful land on holiday in May, we saw some very
strange slugs. We were most interested in some long black ones that
we saw near Aira Force (waterfall) in England's Lake District. These
slugs were about 5 inches long, and many had a circular hole on the right
side of their head. If you poked them gently, they shrink up and look
rather prune-like. Some seemed to be eating smaller light brown slugs.

We've never seen anything like them in the southeastern US. Also what
surprised us about them was how they wandered around during the day.
No slug has the audacity to do that in South Carolina-- the sun would bake
them!

Can anyone tell me about them?

Thanks!
