Hi Anne,

It would have been fun to meet but I was explaining the wine making
process to people at Nashoba Winery on Saturday. The rush started late
but it was busy. The weather was lovely.

I went to a Rose Society Board meeting last night and everyone was
talking about the roses that they have left. Mine have some buds that
were just burnt and I could maybe bring them in but I'm feeling like
it's time to let go of summer. Also, I stopped deadheading about a
month ago.

It's sad. The board voted to give up the current garden last night and
they've been there since forever. The school/extension service that
owns the property in Waltham is in trouble and forced to charge us more
and offer fewer services and we are having more problems getting
volunteers to work on the beds. We will be looking for another, smaller
location.

These changes actually have affected several of the horticultural
societies that called the Waltham location home but I don't know the
details for others.

I gotta go back to city hall today. The conservation commission (and I
say that loosely) has written an Order of Conditions that allows my
neighbor to build a 20 X 40 garage on wetlands that he's filled. (This
is the man who maintains commercial vehicles for a living, but of
course, this is only for his family car:-( )I'm appealing and also
making a fuss as the Order of Conditions says clearly that he will get
the building permit and they have no authority to promise that.

I've been told repeatedly that he's been cited for zoning violations but
the same people have departed Town employ under suspicious circumstances
so I go today to work with the Town Supervisor who has promised to find
documentation of the zoning problems. Without it, my neighbor may well
be able to build.

Sigh,

Esther

Thanks. The pictures are beautiful. I went to the Orchid show at Tower
Hill
Saturday. I can't believe I only bought coconut fiber potting medium. I
have
no more room for more orchids and many needed repotting. Outside I
still
have Tropicana hybred tea roses blooming.

We went to the "Society Row" sale at Waltham Field Station this fall. I am
in the Indoor Gardeners of NE ( a chapter of Hobby Greenhouse Assoc) The
plants for sale were great. The varigated conifers were especially beautiful. My
neighbor is in the Rhody Society so she came with us. All I brought home was
2 perennial hybiscus.
