I've been working with our new camera and posted some pictures of my new
orchids on photopoint. I also have some of my greenhouse and snowbound
garden. They can be found here:

Yes, that is a licorice plant. I have three of them wintering in here. They
were in some garden urns last summer. This is the first time I have tried to
keep them. Hope it works!

Marie,
I am just learning the culture. Have a book in my lap as I write. Don't know
yet, but am anxious to learn. I have a small radiant electric heater that I
use in the greenhouse when the temps get below 20. Other than that, the sun
(when it appears) and an open door to my house with a small fan work pretty
well. Night temps stay around 50 and daytime around 60 (with a lot of sun
they get up to 80)!

Julie,
Don't be concerned. It's not really that little. If you look carefully at
the greenhouse picture(s) you can see part of it. It is the size of an old
fashioned radiator (fits with the house, we have hot water radiator heat)
and plugs into a grounded commercial strip. My husband is a contractor of
many years and has a strong background in safety and wiring. It really is a
great temporary heating source.
And, yes, I love sitting in the summer surroundings and watching the snow
fall around me. Gets me through the winter. . . .

That is an impressive greenhouse you have. I loved the picture with the snow
piled around the door & taa-daaa! Open the door to find orchids! What a lovely
sight on a wintery day! You lucky girl. I am concerned about you using the
little heater. Those things make me nervous......but, if it works for you...who
am I to question?
Nice green thumb, you have there.

I thought I saw a radiator in the pic. When you mentioned a small heater, it
confused me a bit. I tried heating a room in my basement last winter with a
small electric heater when I was fiddling around with seeds & fluorescent
lights. I quickly realized there was no way that little heater would keep the
room warm.
Your garlands around the porch are perfect for your home. I spent a little
time in a town just outside of Madison, I just loved the rolling hillsides, the
green fields and the farmhouses scattered across the countryside. What a pretty
place to live. Your home looks like a dream with the big country porch.

share some spring summer pictures when it rolls around. I'd love to hear

Linda,
Your greenhouse is connected to your house?? Right?
The reason I am so intrested is that here in COLD( FOR US) S.C. I am having a
problem keeping my 12x30 greenhouse warm without spending a bundle to do so.
I have a propane heater and now that propane has increased in price so much I
am casting about , hopefully for a cheaper way to heat. :-) all your plants
look so healthy.
Also I have six Orchids given to me by a lady that came down with cancer last
summer. So far I haven't quite figured out what/ how to take care of them.
They are living and look healthy(I think) but no blooms.
Thanks for sharing all your pictures.
Any experinces you would care to share concerning your greenhouse would be
greatly appreciated by me!

Your greenhouse looks lovely. I only have one orchid blooming now and have
moved it into the diningroom. I have lots of streptocarpus blooming now
and the geraniums. I'm trying to winter a scavola and it is still blooming
some.

Linda,
Thanks, I love my house too! It was built in 1883. We bought it in 1990
after it had seen years of neglect. We have slowly been restoring it. The
greenhouse came from an old home in Madison that was being torn down. We
pieced it back together and put it on ours. It is smaller than we had
originally wanted, but it is the same time frame and style as our home. We
felt we were incredibly lucky to find it. The original porch had been closed
in sometime during the 50's. We found pictures of the house just after it
had been constructed and decided to rebuild it. It is almost finished, all
that is left are stair railings for the front and the side stairway leading
into the garden. Now we are beginning the kitchen, so I was quite interested
in the ktichen thread that was going around a couple of weeks ago.

Anne,
How many types of orchids do you have? Have you been gowing them long? How
successful have you been? Any specific ones a beginner should try?

Any suggestions for a novice would be appreciated. This year I was
given a gift certificate for an orchid....totally new to me. I need to
do some learning how to maintain before I shop. Marg

Linda,
I have cattleya, dendrobium, oncidium and phalenopsis orchids. The cattleyas
I have had for 6 years. I started with two that were given to me and divided
them to 5 about 3 years ago and last spring divided them again and had 26 all
from the origional 2. My greenhouse is cool (45 at night) 55 and whatever
the sun does in the day). I keep a fan on all the time for circulation. The
variety I have blooms huge white flowers with yellow throats in mid April to
June. They are very fragrant. I have kept 12 of the 26. The rest went to
our local Hobby Greenhouse Assoc. meeting for raffle.
The Oncidiums (I have two) are yellow with red spots. One is budded now.
They bloom around January to March. The phalenopsis I keep in the house as
they like it warmer. I have humidity trays under all and automatic misting
for 15 minutes every three days in the greenhouse. The house phals get hand
watered when I think about it. I have had them 3 years and they have
rebloomed for me. I am still learning and no where near an expert. I find
the $9.99 Home Depot ones do well if carefully selected. Look for white
roots or green. No dark dry ones. They also take them for refund or replace
if they die. I did take one back.
Try reading "The Orchid Thief". It is interesting. Can't think of the
author.
Do you have a Hobby Greenhouse Chapter in your area. They are great for
information exchanging and getting plants to try at minimal expense.

Thanks for all your information, Anne! I am looking forward to this new
adventure.

beautiful morning!
