pink lady apples

Mine are Cameos, but this year's crop is not as good as last year's.
They're larger, but not as crisp. Maybe it's because Kroeger's is calling
the shots with Fred Meyer stores now. Rats! I know Albertsons shunts
produce from one facility to another so all you get is hard cardboard mush
that starts rotting when you get it in the door. Maybe Kroeger's is trying
to match that.

Harry!

Pink Ladies are good. In a pinch, we reach for Fuji.

Do you have any Trader Joe's stores near you? They're still selling Pink
Lady apples there. At least they are in Santa Barbara, CA.

Best apples I ever ate, I got completely spoiled by these last spring, but
then they disappeared from the stores here. Are they maybe a very seasonal
apple? And, in the absence of Pink Ladies, what are you favorite eating
apples?

Fuji has tough skin. Didn't tumble to that until last fall, then this year
my Fuji tree came into heavy production. Sigh.

Could it just be the year Margaret? I've never noticed tough skin on any of the ones I buy...

Tough-skinned ones were supermarket, then I noticed mine were pretty tough
too, compared to Cameo.

Hmmm. that's strange (re: tough skin). I was in store the other day and made a point of looking for Cameos, but didn't see any.

Hi Harry,
We still have the Pink Lady apples on sale here.
They are very good.
My favorite is a locally grown in season apple
here - Macintosh.
But only when freshly picked, hard and crunchy.
Braeburn isn't too bad. It depends on how
fresh the apples are.

**Macintosh is my favorite apple too. I don't know what
happened to them this year.- couldn't find any for a long while
and when I finally found them they weren't as tasty as they
usually are? Must have been a bad year for them.

Hi Ann,
I think they store the apples after picking them and
while still good, some may be older.

I like the ones right off the tree. Snappy, cruchy,
and tasty. I can't always tell by looking at the
apple because they all have a natural wax that can
be shinned right up. But I can tell when I
bite into one. :)

Ah, only a Mac is a Mac.

Hi Harry,

We are getting Pink Lady apples in our stores and seem to get them all
winter. My husband, a Macintosh aficionado, has finally agreed to try the
Pink Ladies and loves them. Don't know where ours come from but I do know
we have them around all winter and well into spring. Robin in western Mass.
where it was a balmy 40 F today:)

I've noticed I can't hardly choose apples by name at the grocery--one time
their Galas will be great, the next time cardboard. Same with McIntosh,
Braeburns, etc.

Yes, Margaret, I know I should just grow my own! :)

Re: your problem with tough-skinned apples--that has happened to me with
tomatoes. One year a variety will be great, next it has a tough, thick
skin. Maybe it's related to growing conditions? Maybe Arnhild would know
more on this question?
