The stinkhorn popped up in my back yard a couple of years ago, but there
was no odor associated with it. It's vile in appearance. For a couple of
years, we had a lot of lawn mushrooms the identity of which was unknown to
me. At the same time, we had huge slugs, 5 to 6 inches (13-15 cm.)
long. I had a box planted with different lettuces, and one ate a groove
through the middle until my dog spotted it and removed it. Sparty walked
around licking the roof of his mouth with a sour look on his face, and I
saw the huge slug on the deck, so figured out what had happened. I scooped
up the slug and carried it to the garden, sliced it up and buried it. Next
morning when I started outside, right at eye level on the outside of the
patio door, there was the mate, looking for the giant slug. ewwww. There
were several other giant slugs, and they bored a hole in the lawn to eat
mycelium, I guess. Apart from the lettuce, I don't think they did any
damage other than eating lawn mushrooms. Now we have "meadow mushrooms,"
but we don't eat them. A fan of meadow mushrooms did eat some and said they
had an off taste (that leads me to suspect her original identification was
not quite right). Margaret L

I got a book yesterday, "Mr. Bloomfield's Orchard, The mysterious world of
mushrooms, molds, and mycologists" by Nicholas P. Money. The very first chapter
is " Offensive Phalli and Frigid Caps", in which he discusses the stinkhorn.
I guess he figured he'd grab people's attention that way. I haven't really
started reading it yet to say how good the book is.

Well than, it wasn't one of the three we have in Europe. We have the sort of pinkish-beige spotted "cellar snail" (lots in my backyard), the edible black forest snail and the horrible horrible (but most beautiful) orange to brown Iberian killer snail. Also edible.

The last two are physically the same, but the cellar snail is somewhat thinner and longer.
