Hazel, as soon as I saw the header for your message, that was my first
thought! If I were in your shoes I'd be in intensive care by now!

Heaven help me.
Rats:
Thank you all for your messages. Yes I got a friend to spend two nights
with me and she didn't hear a thing!!! But last night neither did I - I
think they are gone or dead or something i don't want to think about. I
check the pond every morning and there are no signs of them - expecting
some smell but nothing yet!!! The rat man or pest man wasn't too keen on
actually getting into the roof and just lifted a couple of tiles and put a
cup of poison wheat in the ceiling as well as half a bucket in the
manhole.- little dog is safe and I have no children.
Then on Wednesday - went around the back of the house to the vegie garden
and there was a big fat tiger snake. nearly had a heart attack. by the
time i got the shovel he was gone and i haven't picked any veg since. Got
my lawn mowing man to check out the whole back yard and rang the neighbours
to warn them - apparently the jolly thing was seen last weekend and they
didn't bother to let anyone know - don't you love your neighbours!
Thankk you for sending me thoughts i think they may have helped.

Snake only eats one a week or so. Maybe one a month. I don't like the
startle factor of snakes, and think the tradeoff of one mouse or vole per
week is not a good deal. Was that snake venomous? Margaret L

Hazel,
That's most likely where your Rats went ....in the snake!!! As long as you
have snakes around there won't be any mice or rats! I'v found this true
with my peafowl pen...I won't see rats or mice for awhile...then I will
catch sight of a snake slithering away. I think that I dislike snakes more
than mice..maybe..

I like snakes, I used to have a pet one! A garter snake! But I think =
DH let it go! He does not like them! The only kind of snake that I =
don't like is the rattler! My cat spent a week at the vet and $1,300.00 =
from a rattle snake bite! Ugh!
Most of the snakes I see here are afraid of us. They slither away just =
as fast as they can! Except the rattlers, they just lay there and =
rattle at you! They are evil in my eyes!

Hazel, in the part of America with which I'm familiar, our most deadly
snake is a rattlesnake. They dislike thumping on the ground and will leave
any area like that, so people out hiking use walking sticks to thump on the
ground to scare off rattlesnakes. And people say the thumping footsteps of
geese also scare off rattlesnakes. I don't know your situation, but if you
could place a goose "run" around your yard, it might protect from your
poisonous snakes. Eeeeewwww. shudder. That's worse than the rats. Margaret L

The trouble with the snake is a bite will kill and the trouble with the
rats is you cant sleep - almost the very opposite!!
Hate them both

Absolutely Margaret
the damn thing would kill me little dog if i didn't get it to a vet for
anti-venom within 20 minutes and that worries me terribly

Many people around here feel that we are encroaching on snakes territory
and should treat them kindly. I feel not quite the same. They are
poisonous and will kill swiftly so I am very wary of them. They are very
quiet and people have been known to stand on them. even in the heat of
summer i wear boots in the garden and spend alot of time clumphing around
and banging a spade.

Their predecessors, no doubt, waited for somethin' good, but found
elephants too large to eat. Also too uncomfortably heavy. Margaret L

Be careful about relying on the thumping around method for "scaring"
snakes...I was really dismayed to learn that copperheads (and I would
imagine, at least some other poisonous snakes) have the habit of standing
their ground-after all that's how they get their prey-waiting for something
to come by that they can bite and eat.

I don't think a copperhead would try to kill and eat a human. the biggest I've
ever heard of was only about 24 inches long. I think they tend to mostly eat
insects and very small mice as the snake isn't very big around either. I've
stepped on them and had them try to get away versus biting although I have been
bit by one I stepped on. Rattlesnakes I don't mess with, the last one I saw
alive and kicking was a timber rattler about five feet long and about six inches
in diameter. That one got the right of way on the trail.

George, who respects snakes but doesn't fear them

Yeah, well, I guess they grow them smaller in Texas, George! The maximum
length recorded in VA is 48 inches and the ones I've seen are usually in the
3 ft. range. The adults eat small mammals-including squirrels. They
typically remain motionless, but alert when disturbed and will strike if
provoked-apparently they are particularly hostile when hot. They aren't
going to try to eat you and the bite doesn't kill, but apparently you wish
you were dead if you are bitten!

Awww, they're not that bad, except for the Rattlers and the Black Widows =
