Here's a question for all you gardeners in northern climes:

Of all the major turf grasses -- the various ryes, fescues and bluegrasses -- which one, in your experience, greens up earliest in the spring and stays greenest latest into winter? TIA

Steve...
"This Old House" magazine (September 2002) had an article about turf
types of grass. The U. of Rhode Island (W. Michael Sullivan, PhD) is
the home of the first turf research program. I'll bet U. of Rhode
Island has a website you can check.

You can customizing the lawn for color and landscaping effects.

Steve, of the three groups of grasses mentioned, bluegrasses, specifically Kentucky bluegrass, is the most cold tolerant. Here in the mid Atlantic it should maintain good color all
winter, providing it's in good nutritional condition. In addition, Kentucky bluegrass has, in my opinion, the best overall color of the three. If I were to look for the best grass from
an appearance standpoint for northern areas of the country I'd pick a good cultivar of Kentucky bluegrass.
