help with cat problem

Although something like Febreeze will help clean and deodorize, I would
recommend using an enzyme product to break down the urine, so you don't
have to worry about him and the other cats being able to still smell it.

For the enzymes to be the most effective, though, you need to rinse out
the urine as much as you can first, then completely soak the foam and
covering with the enzyme. Could you take the cushions outside and blast
them with a garden hose?

It will take a few days for the enzyme to work, until the cushion has
completely dried naturally. Covering the cushion with old towels will
help, too. The towel will wick some of the enzyme and urine out of the
cushion. I used old towels and just stuffed them in trash bags and
tossed them - they got pretty smelly and I didn't want to deal with
trying to save old towels.

Your best solution would be to try to get the covers off the cushions,
even if you have to split some seams and resew them later. Take the
foam cushions to the laundromat if they have a washer big enough, but
wash the coverings by hand - so you don't shrink them! Then use the
enzyme on both.

If you don't want to go all out with major rinsing first, you can just
soak the area with the enzyme and let it do its thing, but you may have
to repeat the treatment more than once.

Pet supply stores will carry these enzyme products and I've also found
a reasonably priced one at Wal Mart - I think the one from Wal Mart was
called OUT! It worked well for me when I had to clean up an incident
that involved a carpeted closet and a two year old who wasn't quite
potty trained yet!

To get your foam cushions back into the snug coverings, put them into a
trash bag to make them slippery. Once they're into position, reach in
and rip the bag away and pull it out, then zip.

Good luck!

Hi there. We are getting an awful lot of rain. Our basement started
flooding very quickly and I had to hook in my emergency pump fast.
Husband is away.
Our tom cat, was feral now is tame with the two of us only, is fixed
but
still hopeful and has been cycling high this past week.
He is very stressed during these periods and we don't know how to calm
him until the hormones settle. Vet has no more suggestions other than
give him tranquilizers and they really do a number on him.
He is particularly bad this session as Steve is away and he really is
his cat. It also leaves him as solitary male in the house and he
always
gets excited when this happens.
Water was flooding in so I moved the food dishes to the staircase.
That
was fine. Cats went there to eat right away. I moved the litter box to
another room away from the hoses. Never had a problem, before they
always used it before, ignoring (or trying to) the pumping noises.
This morning he decided to pee on the sofa and it was a full load. I
managed to get some urine cleared away but 99% of it soaked into two
of
the cushions well down into the foam. I didn't manage to get much out
with a towel.
I cannot get the covers off even though there is a zipper. I have it
all
sitting in the tub at the moment.
Because his cycle is high, the odor is really strong. Doesn't seem to
be
urinary tract problem, although I will keep a close eye on him for a
bit
to double check. I think he was stuck and afraid to go down to the box
and I should have brought it up except I was so busy. He is a very
fastidious fellow and this is highly unusual behavior. In the meantime
I
have to get this cleaned up and as fast as possible.
Any suggestions how to clean theses cushions really deeply? The foam
is
saturated. I know how to deodorize, but first I need to clean. I don't
have a steamer thing although we might be able to rent one from town.
I
don't know if that would go deep enough.... I cannot afford a new
coach.
Husband is on his way home and is going to be really upset. If I have
rescue for the cushions underway, he might calm down more quickly. He
loves the cats in his way but this could be a "get rid of him" matter.
Please help me, Marg, in Nova Scotia where it is pouring and the rain
gauge was full yesterday afternoon so I haven't a clue how much has
come
down.

Margaret,
Try using a product called Nature's Miracle. You can probably get it at
Petsmart and similar pet stores, or maybe your vet will have it or know of
where to find it in your area. It takes awhile for it to work, but it
eventually breaks down the urine instead of just disguising the odor.

Sorry this happened. BTDT in other places. Can you get Febreeze? That
will help to clean and help with the odor, too. But if it's soaked
deeply into the foam, the cushions will have to be soaked really well
with whatever cleaning solution you use. You really *have* to get them
clean. Even if DH insists *that* cat goes, it will be a magnet for the
others to do the same if you don't, so you won't be accomplishing much
by getting rid of him without a thorough cleaning of those cushions.

This is what I would do if it happened to me: fill the tub with enough
water to cover the cushions and add whatever amount the Febreeze bottle
says. (If you can't get Febreeze, your vet prolly has something you can
substitute). I would then make sure the cushions were well soaked with
solution and squeeze/mash/stomp/whatever it takes to get the solution
into the foam thoroughly. Then rinse in the same way. Drying will be a
problem, especially with the rain you're now having. I would take the
cushions to the laundromat and try drying them on low in the large
dryers. Getting the covers off of the foam would be a big help, though,
in this same process.

Wishing you the best of luck, and hoping I've helped,
