Hi Jim
It sounds to me as though these were quite possibly starved in their
previous home and so not big enough to flower for you immediately. If
you planted them in reasonably fertile ground they should have fattend
up considerably in their first year with you, especially as they were
planted singly, and quite likely most will flower next time they come up.

If you just leave them in the ground and put a good dressing of compost
over their heads they should not only mostly flower for you next year
but begin also to multiply and eventually form nice clumps. If regularly
well fed they should be able to remain undisturbed for several years.
