I saw a toad in my garden this morning. I realized that I hardly every
see them anymore. My garden is pretty wild this year though. I wonder
what attracts them?

Bugs and a water source attract them. I always have a lot of them and =
have
to watch out for them when I mow the not-a-lawn. The bigger ones seem =
to
have a limited range because once I see one in a particular location I
usually see him again nearby. Not that I could identify one in a lineup =
but
mine come in many sizes so that's an indication. I think I read that =
they
are territorial.
I was watching my puddles in a recent rain to make sure that the biggest
ones were draining into the ditch that the state made my neighbor dig =
and I
saw a little one go flying though/over the puddles toward the wetlands. =
A
few seconds later I saw a slim little snake swimming through the puddles =
in
the same direction. They are both good guys from a get-the-bugs =
perspective
but I do think they compete with each other, too.

Hi Elizabeth,
Bugs and flies?? Water?
Some have put toad houses in their gardens.
I think you can make one or maybe find one
in a garden shop.
Or maybe you're lucky!

Toads can come in handy for mosquito ridden garden parties. My brother
treated the mossies with spray the first time and they and the guests all
left in a hurry. The second time, he collected all the toads from his
window wells and deposited them under the guests chairs. The mosquitoes
disappeared very quickly and the guests were entertained and they stayed.

I have two toad houses in the garden, even put them into dampish places, but
never any toads.
Oh well, the one is so pretty it looks like garden art. :>)
