Oops. Found an amarylis in a pot in the garden from last year that had been
forgotten. It was burried in leaves and acorns so I brought it in and
removed all the soil and junk.
Now I have two small bulbs with tons of roots and only two bedragled leaves.
Should I just repot it and keep it indoors until spring or cut the
leaves/roots like you see them dry in bins for sale this time of the year?
Let it dry either in a paper bag or dry peat? Then start it again in a few
weeks or months?
Zone 9 and lows mostly in the low 40's now. Sydney
Repot them ASAP...they really don't like to have their roots removed
and get totally dried out - they tolerate it, but they don't like it.
Just leave the bedraggled leaves unless they are totally yellow...if
they are, cut them off.
Pot them in a pot just large enough to take the root mass - they
like being a bit pot bound. Make sure to leave the neck and upper
part of the bulb exposed; don't bury that. Put the pots somewhere
cool; can be dark, but above freezing. Water them in when you repot
to settle the soil around the roots and then don't water again until
you see new growth. Once you see new growth, move the pots to as
bright a light as you can and water them. Watch the soil - you don't
want to water too much until they are growing away nicely, but don't
let them dry out again once they have started growth.
They may or may not bloom for you. If they don't, just keep watering
and feed them over summer - summer them in a sunny or very lightly
shaded spot and bring them in in the fall - tho' in z 9, they will
grow outside in the ground for you and winter over fine...so you
could just plant them out in spring after you've hardened them
off...let Ma Nature do all the work:-)
