Hello again....
1. I planted blackberries the thornless variety (I believe Navajo)...two years
ago. This will be the second year that they bloom. I have heard that you should
prune the old canes that produced from the previous year. I did get some
production the first year but very little. I did not cut back anything on the
plants. Now when I look at them I see a lot of long stems and don't know where I
should prune them to be productive for this year. Any suggestions??
2. Looking for good ideas on staking these guys for the long term?
Kind regards,
Barbara Gage
Navaho and Arapahoe are two popular blackberries in your area. Call your
County Extension Agent for pruning, tieing, and fertilizing advice as it is
different in different ag zones. Barring that try the Texas A & M ag web
site for information. I have Navaho's on order even though they are not
rated for my zone, sometimes zone 8 plants can be successfully grown here
in 9b. You should also ask your county agent about veggie varieties that
are successful in your area. Your taxes pay for the resource so don't be
bashful. Besides, in some "citified" parts of the country the ag agents are
anxious to help vegetable gardeners.
