Does that mean using too big a pot?

Maybe that answers a question I was going to ask. My meconopsis seed
packet says to transplant into 3" pots, then into 4" pots... I was
wondering why not just go straight to the 4" pots. I guess you don't want
a lot of dirt with no roots in it.

It also says to put them in the ground in August. I know the mid-atlantic
climate is too hot for them, but since I'm trying, does it make sense to
take them out of the A/C in the hottest part of the summer?

Precisely.

Well, good luck to you. I tried growing them in an Iowa greenhouse
by putting them in a coldroom in the summer and growing them under
HID lights in the winter... they weren't fond of it. They really
seem to like a "British climate".
