Harnesses are recommended when (trying) to walk your cat on a leash. When =
I got my cats ten years ago, all came from a farm where they'd been used =
to an outdoor life, so I was determined to take them all for a daily =
outing, safely attached to a leash. Two of the three were very accepting =
of the harness and lease, the third had hysterics, but there was no going =
for a walk with any of them. "Going for a wander" would be more like =
it--under porches, up a tree, through bushes--short of dragging kitty by =
pure force it was impossible to make any progress, and I gave up the idea =
of exercising my cats outdoors.
I've seen some people tie their cats outside, but this seems to me to risk =
endangering the animal, since it can't run if attacked.

My cat (MIL has it now to keep her company) is an indoors cat. She was
declawed and neutered. The vet said indoor cats live longer than outdoor
cats. Princess is at least 13 years old. The one time I had an outdoor
(sort of adopted) cat it vanished. We get some neighborhood cats here,
but I don't mind them. When I try to call them, they run away, so they
might even be drop-offs although they look well fed.

I have a cat who loves going out on her leash. She is a wanderer and a
scouncher. Can't get close enough to the grass and plays havock in my
garden given half a chance. Anything green and wavy must die a horrible
death. It is the only way she gets out and she runs to fetch the harness
and leash herself. For awhile she was driving me nuts.
Now the cat she was with when we found them, while my husband was on a
fishing trip (way back in the woods miles from anyone) nearly killed
himself trying to get away from both.
Years ago I had a new kitten given to me and she went right into a
collar (couldn't get a harness the size to fit her until I figured how
to tie one) and leash immediately and she loved to walk all over the
city where we lived. Every night after work we would walk to the beach,
we used to live in downtown Vancouver, and we visited all sorts of
people as our routine then she would chace the frilly wave edges along
the beach. If she got tired she would jump up and ride my shoulder or
crawl into the top of my pack. She also like to ride my motor bike. :?)
