If these folks just 'buy' art, a good technique is to
get a mail-order catalog of things you actually LIKE
for seasonal decorations (or all the time). Then
'drool' over it sometime in front of them, or when
you're both buying someone else a present, fetch it
out, saying, 'I've always really wanted one of these
beautiful (whatevers), but I can't persuade myself to
indulge in something so impractical. Let's get her
one, I know she'll love it.' Maybe they think you
need some 'fun' in your life, and just haven't
figured out that ketchy plastic Americana art isn't
quite the ticket. Some people love it (there are
three pink flamingo multiple displays already on my
block), but tastes DO differ.
If they craft things themselves (like my mother),
it's even harder. I did finally get her to thinking
'Victorian' art, instead of four-year-old daughter
designs... sigh. Oh! Last year I managed to convince
her that her recipe for cinnamon rolls was REALLY the
thing I wanted most for Xmas. Finally, we were both
happy with things given AND received!

Z5 PA - I gave her a hand-crocheted pair of slippers,
monogrammed with her name. I always ask if there is
something someone really wants though, and try to get
THAT first. If I can; couldn't the time my younger
brother wanted a car. :)

DH and I have been telling each other what we want for our anniversary
for years. Works out great because then we're both happy. This year he
bought (a month early, too) himself a compound mitre saw and a biscuit
joiner.

I don't think it's terrible, at all. It should be whatever you feel
like. I can remember a few lean years when we only gave each other
cards--dinner would have been an extravagance.

I received a great pre-BDay gift yesterday from my neighbour who will be =
celebrating their 50th. Actually my Bday's quite a long way off, but she =
thought I could make use of it now. Its a dehydrator. I was very pleased =
as I had wanted and planned on buying one myself. And now DH says he had =
it on his list too.
Now, I am wondering what the heck to get them for their 50th and her 80th =
in Sept.

Sounds terrible, but we don't always buy each other anything for our =
anniversary and sometimes not even for birthdays. We usually go out to =
dinner though. If one of us really wants something and its expensive we =
discuss it and take it from there. I'm the more frugal in some ways.

I too remember a few lean years. Money isn't the issue now its just that =
he usually wants something that he can better choose for himself - like =
computer stuff, tools, etc. He knows better than to buy me clothes :-)

Penny, does she get out much? Is she fairly house-bound? If so, get her a
selection of greeting cards -- birthday, sorry I haven't written,
congratulations and sympathy cards. And a packet of stamps. That's for her
birthday. I don't have a clue for their 50th. Margaret L
